Steady Progress on the Madina-Adenta Footbridges.

The construction of Madina-Adenta highway footbridges underway.

The contractors assigned to the construction or the completion of the Madina-Adenta highway footbridges are making steady progress to that effect. The decision to complete these footbridges was taken as a result of a various demonstration exercises which followed the death of the West African Senior high School girl.

This sad incident happened on the Friday the 2nd of November 2018. The angered youth allegedly called on the Adenta Motor Traffic and Transport Division (MTTD) to help the victim to the hospital, they delayed and she lay by the side of the road, where she had been pulled to by sympathizers, until she died. The incident angered the youth, who blocked the highway for about an hour and a half with mini-billboards, stones, big yellow gallons, popularly referred to as 'Kufuor gallon', wooden boards and stones.

The government then assured that works on the uncompleted footbridges on the Madina-Adenta highway will begin by the following week. A statement from the inter-ministerial Committee on Roads and Highways, Transport and Interior said multiple contractors will be deployed to ensure the footbridges are fixed immediately.

“Work is to be done on an accelerated basis with multiple contractors to ensure quick completion,” sections of the statement read. Meanwhile, government also deployed officers of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service to oversee that traffic is reduced on the stretch and also to enforce the relevant road traffic regulations on speeding limits.”

The traffic lights were also fixed immediately to improve visibility on the highway. Reports suggest more than 194 people have been knocked down on the Madina-Adentan highway in recent times while attempting to cross the road.
