The Social Services Subcommittee of the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly undertook an exercise to inspect water hydrants within the central business District of the Municipality. The six members of the Committee led by the Chairman, Hon. Braimah Blay together with technical staff drawn from the key departments of the Assembly toured various sections of the Madina Market. Some of the key officers from the Works Department, Physical Planning Department, the Fire Service and Police Service accompanied the committee to embark on the inspection.

The Madina Divisional Fire Service led the field inspection. The inspection was conducted in Madina around the market, Nkulenu , Nkwantanang ,Alhaji Seidu Road , Hanna Road and Zongo Junction. The purpose of the inspections was to find out the situation with regards to functionality of the various hydrants and their readiness to assist in fire fighting and emergencies. During the inspections it came to light that most fire hydrants had been obscured and built over by squatters. Some of the hydrants were also not functioning.
The Chief Fire Officer of Madina was unhappy about the situation and asked for the assistance of the Municipal Assembly to clear all impediments to access the hydrants since they are critical in handling fire outbreaks and other emergencies.
The Chairman and other members of the Subcommittee committed to pursue the matter to a logical conclusion and ensure that all hydrants are protected to serve their purpose.
